Ruth- writtings

September 2013

Ruth and i are always facing challenges on her development. i have to use three months to improve her hand writing. August we begin the journey to improve her writting together with her father. I will say she has make a good improvement with most of the word, sentences written by her is able to read by us. As usual Ruth has gone thru all the therapy lesson before she starts her day to learn lesson which prepare her form grade 1.

Prior to this, Ruth’s hand writing was not so sharp but now it is sharp. I am able to read, she has also learn to write properly with awareness spacing between the words. A girl from zero skill i should said has transform to someone who can read, count, write, sing, dress up herself, socialise, carry out instruction,  I will say it is a great improvement take place in Ruth.

August when i gave her the task to write on book contain 4 lines, Ruth just unable to coordinate the space judgement to write on the right line with right spacing. example 1. Ruth also has difficult to write letter g, h, y,u, d, b. This is the second month i work intensively with her on hand writtings.  Daily she is not just doing hand writtings but we put into therapy method that will  improve her finger coordination and strength. She also has to cope up with the preparation for grade 1 learning, should her parent decided to send her. Two year plus with Ruth, i can see her vast improvement as the day goes by. Her gross motor coordination skill has also improved. In those day she is unable to jump with both leg lifted up and catch ball. Today, she could walk on the balancing wood bar, then jump into the tyres then jump out and land in the hula hop circle and jump out.

There is no one size fit into all children, i have really to think and design therapy method that suit into the developmental need of Ruth to achieve the optima result.

Ian-animal vs speech

September 2013

I love to work with Ian, in him i see many interesting thing that make me think out of box to develop him. Ian is a boy who loves animals, well how can i introduce sight word to him? It will be dull to just read sight words, hence i incoporate animal name into the sight words. i introduce sight word like “find” , “go”, “walk”, “to”. Then i repeat the sight word again by engage animal nouns. eg. find me lion, Ian will find the word card with the word “lion”.Then I say go to find me tiger, Ian will find me the word with tiger. The same I repeat for the others , upon Ian find all the cards. I lay them down to read together with him.

Phrases make from those word may not make sense but my objective for him is to learn sight word is achieve. Here it goes”- Find me tiger, go find me tiger, walk me to lion-sound funny.

Therapy is provided to Ian in daily basis to give his brain in optimum capacity. Feedback from his mom, she says Ian response less to speech therapist, Ian seems not interested in speech lesson. The speech therapist deliver a lesson Ian. She wants Ian to learn word about item in the kitchen. Many time in reality we want the child to accept what we adult wants the child to learn instead to understand the ability of the child and respect to the interest of the child.  I believe that is why the child wont response to us as adult. This goes to Ian as well. I wont be surprise of Ian’s  mom’s feedback. Let us see how Ian improve as the days goes by.

Samuel-attention

March 2014,

Time pass by too fast, now is March, soon April.

Today i only know the previous Samuel is so tough for his mom to handle. I seldom like to touch on how is Samuel at home. What his parents brief me when i first saw him in 2013 is Samuel will run away when he is out of house. eg if you open the house gate Samuel will run away instead to walk into the car.

Morning his mom said Samuel improve so much.. my reply in what way? wah little will i know at home Samuel give parents hard time. His mom say it is no way she can left Samuel alone in the hall and she went upstair to have her bath. He commented if no one eye on Samuel, he may go to the kitchen,  take tea, coffee and make drinks , sometime he plays the knife and gas cooker. Wah i got a shock, my reply to her is are you sure?. Samuel’s mom reply yes. i cant believe it. it must be tough for a working mom to work and have to look after him with in law’s support.

However Samuel’s mother feedback since ever attend my therapy lesson Samuel has improve so much. He no longer went to the kitchen to play around. Samuel will on the television and watch the channel to his interest. what a relief as least Samuel can sit and not wonder around at home.

Samuel has accepted to our National public special need school. I notice his command of understand and process basic Bahasa Malaysia has improve. Samuel no longer talk air (talk some thing unrelated to my question.) Samuel now able to process my question. His understanding process of language has also show improvement. Today i just realize the little improvement with Samuel has give his mom a happy smile.

Year of 2014- Rais, Carson

Jan 2014

I want to thank all the readers of my blog.

Year 2014 is a challenging year to me. The price hikes up in most of the consumer goods is a great challenge. Should i increase the therapy fees like most of the therapist do ?

This years i have  preschooler children able to integrated to the normal preschool after attended my therapy lesson.  In view of vacant place i have taken in four new cases. Rather a  challenging new year, a year with challenging behavior children, none respond children, speech and communication delays children.  A mixture of challenges children.

Thank God, amazing development always take place. Hence i believed in healing comes from the God thru therapy.

Feedback parents.

case 1. Nick name : Rais

Boy age 4 with challenging behavior has melted down his tantrum behavior, he begin to develop  information processing. His mom said his tantrum has melt down. Boy begin to understand instruction given to him and able to carry out the task. He is able to begin follow us with naming the colors: eg. yellow, purple, black.

During our music movement lesson. I notice Rais could focus on what the music teacher taught. He could follow to say “Do, Re, Mi” then clap hand with tempo and beats. I could notice Rais tantrum has getting lesser. He is more understanding of instruction.

case 2.

Boy age 3, Nickname :  Carson

Boy has not much respond when one calls him. Boy has speech delay. The medical specialist has label him as autistic. Oh dear boy only age 3, there are much rooms for him to improve if the right therapy is given. I believe a child’s brain has a room to develop which i call it plasticity of brain.

However after a month therapy with me, boy is able to respond with smile.

He is more engage with his young brother where he call the young brother as didi. (didi is young brother, wet is wee wee)

Feedback from his mom. She said Carson seem can different between day and night time. At night after his mom clean him up. His mom will place three pair of clothing, one is for going out from home, sight seeing cloth, one pair is for home cloth and another pair is  pyjamas. She was surprise to see Carson able to select pyjamas.  Carson’s mother say before attend my therapy lesson, Carson is unable to identify the right cloth at the right time to wear.

Samantha – alphabet naming

September,

Time passed by very fast. Samantha has grown up and her interest to learn really gives me a great courage. Despite her inability to name the letters of the alphabet, she still takes books to look at it and ask questions.

Samantha progressed from not being able to match the letters of the alphabet to a girl who can do so now. We moves into naming the alphabet, I mean she has to know the names of the letters. I notice that when she improves her motor skills, she also improves in other areas. In Rebound Therapy, Samantha has acquired the skill to do a “sit drop”. It looks easy but for a girl like her, it is a great achievement.

In naming the letters I have narrowed it down to work with 5 letters each time. I begin to see she is able to point out the correct letter to me when I name them. This happens to words matching as well. I notice she begins to see the print in order. eg. if the word is “peg”, she is able to find the word “peg” to match it up. She could no do that previously: she could not recognize the print.

Is this the way she progresses her learning? I say it is healing in progress. Her vocabulary in both English and Mandarin has also improved. She can now better understand instructions.

Her cognitive development in living skills has also expanded. After the meal she will volunteer to organize to clear the dishes away. Dishes come in a variety of size and to my surprise she has the cognitive ability to understand that the large plate must be put on the bottoms and then on top of that the smaller ones. She seems to have found that out all by herself. This is a significant development. She understands relative sizes and applies that knowledge to a practical situation. This is a significant evolution and I expect that in the near future we will see more breakthroughs in her skills.

Abel-communication

September 2013.

Joys is what i encounter when i see Abel has improve each day. He transform from a boy who will bang his head against the wall and fall on the ground like a tree trunk when he was upsad to a boy who now able to express in speech and communication. Rebound therapy and other therapy skill i am design for Abel has helped him to improve as the day goes by.

His parent enrolled him for speech and development lesson, but i have go beyond speech to Abel, his cognitive development has also improved. I always told his mom that Abel is much better than other children, his mom think i want to please her. Hence daily she will come early to fetch Abel, so as to spend time with us. She begin to see other children’s learning challenges are more tough than Abel. I told her i don’t i know how to have sweet word to please parents. I am very direct to the point instead of go into the bushes and some out again.

Abel love to bounce on trampoline. On one occassion i insisted him to say ” i want jump, i want bounce.” Abel refuse to say, so Rebound therapy on that slot i have gave to another person. on the following day, Abel has volunteer say “i want to jump”. There i allow him to follow my RT lesson. He really bounce in joys, as he bounce i can see his tantarum has decrease and communication processing has begin to take place. Now whenever Abel want some thing he will make verbal request. for eg, he will say ” i want to go out” in the evening time. Apart from speech Abel also begin to development cognitive development. At the moment he is learning isolation of number with quantity and number words.

i have also cultivate Abel to like book. There are time he will take the dictionery with picture to recall what we have tought him in verbal .

Ian – writting

September.

Time will not wait for us.  It passed by very fast. It has been  almost 18 months Ian attend my lesson. I have seen him growth from a boy who does not have speech, poor eye contact, can’t read, write and response to a boy who has speech, communication, meaningful eye contact and response in the right situation so as to read and write and counts. Therapy lesson is provided to Ian daily, this to keep his brain into optima capacity to focus and coordinate.

When i look back into the month of January 2013 I could recall, I am in the process of coaching Ian to match same alphabet together. eg. a to a, b to b and so on. Now Ian acquired the skill of writing, reading and counting. I have notice the way Ian trace shape of triangle, square, rectangle, which of did not has a concept of stroke and pattern. With this will Ian able to have concept to write alphabet? I begin to spoke to her mom. We rectify the concept to trace shape. As we move on, I begin to see Ian begin to develop concept though not in perfect. We start it by development lower case letter. It work well for Ian, though there are time i will have to start the engine for Ian to carry on the writing.

I also learn to blend into Ian, eg, Ian love animals, hence i will start the writing mixture of animal nounce and other nounce like public place or stationery. Many time we adult insist the child to follow our instruction instead of try to understand of their  need in development. This happen to Ian as well. I learn to blend in with him, he cooperates he talk more. He does not shut himself down.

Ian’s working mom has journey with him a lot. I truely thank her for her participation in improving Ian.

Gen. Samuel Development 1.1.

August 2013

Time passes by so fast, It has been more than a month since I returned from the UK after attending  my Rebound Plus course and travel to co-tutor two group of adults who have a passion to learn Rebound Therapy with Mr. Paul Kaye. It was my pleasure to travel to meet the founder of Rebound Therapy Mr. Eddy. Mr. Eddy is an amazing Therapist, he has a natural touch with children. He shares in-depth knowledge about RT to me.

Recently, I took up a case from another special needs centre. I designed a combination of Rebound therapy plus other therapy lessons to fit Samuel’s need for development. Samuel is age 6. According to his mother, whenever Samuel gets out from the house, they need to hold tight his hand, otherwise he will run away . As soon as he gets out of the car, he will run off. This sounds challenging to me and I slot him in for my evening therapy lesson. Samuel blends in with my lessons, after just two lessons, I can just stand to watch him walk over to his mother’s car from my place. It is about 30 meter of walking. Thru proper observation of Samuel, I was able to design a therapy lesson for him. Ruth was like Samuel, whenever her father took her out, she would run away due to excitement. However now her father can easily can take her out from home. They even went for vacation to Bali, India and Disney Land Hong Kong.

As for Samuel I encourage his parents to involve him in the activities around the house eg. like carrying a shopping bag with groceries from the car to the home. This will gives Samuel a sense of responsibility. Feedback from his father, he said now Samuel will carry it and follow his father into the house rather than run away each time he gets out of the car. Truly there is not one method of therapy that can fit all the children. One needs to observe and understand the response of the child before a therapy lesson is carried out.
